Charlize Theron is in talks to play Marie Colvin, an eye-patch-wearing war reporter for the London Sunday Times who died earlier this year while covering the conflict in Syria. Theron is reportedly still hammering out the details of the project.
Charlize Theron has been having a pretty good time recently on film, showing her comedic range in "Young Adult" and diving into sci-fi and fantasy with scenery-chewing turns in "Prometheus" and "Snow White and the Huntsman."
But according to The Hollywood Reporter, fun time is now over, as Theron is producing and may star in a deadly serious film about the life of slain war correspondent Marie Colvin.
Hey, at least she'll get to wear an eyepatch.
One of the best known and most important war correspondents of the last quarter century, Marie Colvin was renowned for her fearlessness. Reporting from behind the lines in such hot spots as Kosovo, Chechnya and Sierra Leone, Colvin lost an eye in a grenade attack in Sri Lanka carried out by troops targeting journalists. Donning an eyepatch, she returned to cover conflicts throughout the Middle East before being killed in a rocket blast in Syria last year in another attack believed to have been targeting reporters.
Besides inspiring a generation of journalists, Colvin's courage and conviction also inspired Vanity Fair author Marie Brenner to write about her life and death in a piece titled "Marie Colvin's Private War," which chronicles Colvin's struggle with post traumatic stress disorder and her three rocky marriages. And now it's caught the attention of Theron and her producing partner Basil Iwanyk, who plan to adapt the story for the big screen.
Of course, nothing is set in stone yet, but it would seem to be the perfect vehicle for Theron to flex her serious acting muscles once again. We can't wait to see her fight the good fight.
