Mare Nostrum International Swimming in Monaco, In 2000, the Mare Nostrum International Swimming competition in Monaco was the setting for the first meeting of Prince Albert II and the woman who would one day become his princess. While we can't guarantee romance for every spectator, there will certainly be as much electricity in the air as some of the best swimmers in the world take to the pool at the Stade Louis II.

The elite of the sport will be gathering in Monaco for the final episode of the three-stage international swimming meet, earlier legs of which are held in Barcelona and Canet. Prizes totalling €21000 are awarded at a Gala dinner on the Sunday.Among the notable entries this year are a number of recent World Champions including Australia's Marieke Guehrer (2009 50m butterfly World Champion), Brent Hayden from Canada (2007 100m freestyle World Champion), and - from Princess Charlene's South Africa - Cameron van der Burgh (2009 50m breaststroke World Champion).

Continuing this gallery of sporting heroes, France is represented by Camille Muffat (200m freestyle World Champion), Great Britain by Liam Tancock (50m backstroke World Champion), and Sweden by Therese Alshammar (2011 50m freestyle World Champion).

And that's only the start. More than a dozen countries are participating, with several of them sending national teams. If you don't have tickets to see the swimming at the London Olympics, this is the next best thing!
